Cayo District is one of the most culturally rich and diverse destinations in Belize with over 880,000 acres of national parks, rainforests and nature reserves.
Cayo was once the heart of the Maya civilization, rich with archaeological sites such as Cahal Pech and Xunantunich, which is believe to have been the longest established Maya site in Belize. This area is also endowed with many sink holes and caves, the most popular being Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) locally known as "Xibalba" or "The Cave of the Crystal Sepulchre." ATM is a water cave system made famous for the Crystal Maiden, a calcified skeletal remain, one of the many victims that were sacrificed to appease the gods.
It is not only the ancient history that sets this district apart. It’s the diverse culture, the rugged beauty of its region with jagged limestone hills, lush rainforests entwined with rivers, magnificent Maya temples, waterfalls and ecological reserves which also make it a predominant destination for active adventurers.
