Thank you all and we hope to see you again soon in beautiful Belize!  Viva Belize!

Belize is a nation that is nestled in Central America. The country has two land borders, one with Mexico and the other Guatemala. It is also bordered by the Caribbean Sea. The nation in 2010 was inhabited by 324,528 people according to the Belize Population and Housing Census conducted that year, however 2015 estimates suggest that the population is now 368,000. If that is the case, then in the first half of this decade the population of Belize has grown by around 13%. The country’s GDP in 2016 is estimated to be $1.77 billion according to the International Monetary Fund.

Southwest Airlines launched flights to Belize City in October 2015 from Houston Hobby. For S17 the LCC will introduce a further two routes to Belize’s capital, one from Denver and the other Fort Lauderdale. As a result the airline will grow its capacity to the Central American nation by nearly 117% this upcoming summer, meaning it will overtake Delta Air Lines to become the third largest US airline serving Belize.

We stayed at Villa Margarita and some of our family at Jaguar Reef. It was my first trip to a tropical location and my expectations were exceeded. From the moment you arrive and are seated in their grand lobby and handed a warm towel and beautifully crafted drink, you know you are in paradise.

Andre checked us in and brought our sign in paperwork to us – no standing around a desk. He catered to us the entire time we were there. A real destination expert. Our room and view were crazy beautiful and all of the pools and activities were heavenly. Paddle boards, kayaks and snorkeling gear were all free to use. When we were ready to branch out and see Belize, Stacey at the adventure desk was an amazing help. She knew all of the activities inside and out and had experienced many of them first hand so she was able to speak to them. Her professionalism and positivity made every interaction with her a joy!

Andrew in the restaurant asked what we were up to one day and I told him we were doing a cave tour. I told him I was nervous and he sweetly encouraged me to see it as an opportunity to explore an ancient culture. It was above and beyond. Here he was cooking our breakfast and still took a minute to encourage me not to be afraid. It was a very touching moment. Total kindness. Larry was another amazing employee– always quick to offer a smile and directions or whatever else we needed. Friendly and caring to say the least. I’m in hospitality myself and understand the long hours and hard work it takes to run a resort. This crew made it seem effortless! I encourage everyone to experience this place for themselves!

I visited Sleeping Giant Lodge in Cayo, Belize for the first time in August 2014 and was…blown away. I gushed. Yes I did.  And you can see it all here.  But the casita (larger than my apartment), the pool and the view… I’d seen nothing like it in Belize.

Sleeping Giant

This past Monday, after dropping my passport off at the US Embassy for renewal, I was picked up for transfer to Sleeping Giant Lodge.  Just about 20 minutes up through the foothills of Belize’s Maya Mountains, a turn up a short driveway and…we were there.   I was here to check out their newest rooms…up the side of the cliff, almost, but, again, ridiculously beautiful.

Up a bunch of stairs that are well worth it for the amazing view of the “sleeping giant”. There are some pretty amazing views in Belize – the barrier reef is certainly one.  But this may be my favorite.

Let me try to do it some justice… here are my photos. From my cliffside suite to the lovely grounds.

Palatial bedroom…

IMG_8231

With a bed made for napping and 10 hour sleeps.  Please!  Don’t judge!

IMG_8237

I love the bouquets of fresh flowers.

IMG_8238

But, you can see a bit in the bathroom mirror, there is a HUGE shower and then just large glass windows out onto an enormous balcony.  With a two person Jacuzzi…and the view…

IMG_8364

And if the Jacuzzi view isn’t enough.  You can ascend three stairs to your own plunge pool.  And feel like you are suspended on a cliff face…because you actually are.

IMG_8370

Sure…Sleeping Giant Lodge is an amazing place to go to the ATM Cave,  to visit Maya sties like Xunantunichor Tikal, to tube through St. Herman’s Cave  (which is amazing and actually next door)…the lodge is basically sitting on a giant cave system.

But I decided to spend my two days and nights enjoying gorgeous suite…oh and yes…the grounds.

My hammock.

IMG_8372

And then down the steps to the main lodge and the main pool.

IMG_8353

The pool is just…

IMG_8358

And flowers flowers everywhere.

IMG_8362

Oh look…an orchid.

IMG_8329

And literally everywhere you go, from every room, you hear streams trickling into the Sibun River.

IMG_8308

I particularly love this beautiful purple budding bush…though it drops flowers like crazy.  I’m sure the gardeners curse it.

IMG_8291

In the evening, the entire lodge…all the paths…are lit with torches.  I’m use the word again – this place really is magical.

For the location and the view, for the beautiful grounds, for the attentive staff, for the amazing tour options…and for the fact that this lodge is part of a larger group.

Viva Belize has resorts around Belize (I’m now at the fabulous Villa Margarita in Hopkins.)  Jungle, reef, beach… they can hook you up at some amazing spots. Help you mix and match… An hour transfer and I was in Hopkins. My view yesterday snorkeling.

IMG_8506

I mean…look at my view this morning!

IMG_8583

From jungle to beach to reef all in a few hours.  Sigh.  It really is the magic of Belize.

St Herman’s Blue Hole National Park consists of two main caves known as St Herman’s Cave and the Crystal Cave. St. Herman’s Cave has a picturesque 180 ft. wide entrance with a steep cliff wall draped in vines.

The cave itself is at the base of another sinkhole with an underground stream that connects it to the inland Blue Hole sinkhole. This particular cave is a great spot to go cave tubing, so if you are looking for an extra adventure, be sure to bring along your inner tube.

Both caves however, consist of two main crystal formations that are worth the trip. Stalactites which are the pointed structures from the ceiling downwards and stalagmites which are the formations from the floor up.
