We left knowing that we were heading for an incredible Adventure!
Landing at Belize City International airport, we realized that we were already in the much sought after tropical climate: the sun, the breeze and the people were just as we imagined. From this modest and welcoming airport of the former capital of the country, we set out to fly in a small plane through the coast flanked by the second world’s largest barrier reef and tropical rainforest, a sight to behold.
Our first stop: Hopkins – a small fisherman’s village on the southern coast of Belize. By car it would have taken approximately 3 hours; instead, we opted to take the plane and after 20 minutes we landed in Dangriga. A half hour drive later we entered the curious and picturesque village of Hopkins.
Hopkins is unique with its distinctive Garifuna culture. The Garinagu, descendants of Africans, Arawaks and Caribs, have their own culture, gastronomy, music and way of life.
Upon arrival at Jaguar Reef Lodge & Spa, we were greeted at the front with a Jaguar fruit punch and a cheerful concierge, who immediately took us to our Beachfront Cabana. The cozy beachfront cabana is spacious, fully air-conditioned, with ceiling fan, vaulted ceiling, a private front verandah with hammock, and most importantly, the most astonishing view of the Caribbean Sea.
The first days were spent well; relaxing by the beach, having fun and drinking refreshing cocktails by the swim up pool bar. We met Larry, the Beach Captain, who brought fresh coconuts for us daily. We also enjoyed the local cuisine and great service being offered at the Jaguar Reef Restaurant.
But soon our favorite place of the entire resort became the Adventure Desk. We stopped by to be informed and book our activities for the upcoming days of our stay. We received help to prepare our daily schedule for the upcoming month with a wide variety of tours available so it becomes easier for us to explore the entire country with the best and most knowledgeable guides in Belize.
Tomorrow, we are heading out to explore the underwater world and snorkel the barrier with Jaguar Reef Lodge & Spa. It is a promise of a great adventure, so we are calling it an early night and heading to bed.
Stay tuned as Marta continues to share her Belize Adventure with us!
