After several days in the Garifuna Fishing Village of Hopkins, we wanted to venture off and explore a little more of this fascinating culture and get a firsthand experience of their music, language and intriguing way of life.
Some of my favorite ways to discover this charming Garifuna Culture in Hopkins Village are:
1. Garifuna Night at on the beach at Jaguar Reef Lodge
Every Friday at Jaguar Reef Lodge you can enjoy a unique Garifuna show at the beach. A local group of Garifuna dancers, singers and musicians will gather to showcase their unique culture while you enjoy a wonderful dinner or a local rum cocktail prepared with care. Let your body and soul fly through this magical night and join them on the sandy dance floor.
2. Ride a Bike or Rent a Golf Cart
Cycling or driving a Golf Cart is another way to explore the village. Through the dirt road, you will see small bars and local restaurants serving traditional Garifuna dishes and local artisans making jewelry from conch shells. Bicycles are complementary at Jaguar Reef Lodge & Spa and Golf Carts can be rented at the resort’s Adventure Desk.
3. A day at the Drumming Center
Join an inspiring Garifuna Drumming class at the Lebeha Drumming Center on the north side of Hopkins. You will have the opportunity to learn and feel the Garifuna rhythm through their drums and be ready to shake your hips!
4. A night at local bar – Driftwood
On Tuesday nights everybody knows where the party is: at the small beachside restaurant and bar, Driftwood. A Garifuna group enlivened the evening while enjoying a delicious pizza and cold Belikin beer.
Hopkins Village is a small, vibrant community of approximately 1,500 villagers. Residents are known for their friendliness and genuine hospitality, and are very welcoming to visitors. The Village is considered to be the cultural center of the Garifuna people and is often referred as the #1 Cultural Destination in Belize.
